Ingredients

  • 6 slices Sourdough French Bread *1/2- 3/4 inch thickness
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil *divided into portions for cooking 4 slices at a time

Instructions

  • In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Heat a well-seasoned cast iron skillet or stainless steel pan over medium heat and add a small amount of cooking oil, ensuring the surface is evenly coated. See Note #1 below.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring they're evenly coated but not excessively soaked. Aim for about 15-20 seconds per side to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Place slices of the coated bread onto the preheated skillet or pan, allowing them to cook until golden brown and crispy on one side, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Flip the slices and cook the other side until golden brown and crispy as well, adjusting the heat if necessary to prevent burning.
  • Once cooked to your desired level of crispiness, remove the French toast from the pan and serve immediately with your favorite toppings such as butter, maple syrup, fresh berries, or powdered sugar. See Note #2 below for additional toppings.
  • Repeat with the remaining slices of bread.

Notes

Recipe Notes
Note #1- The trick to cooking French toast on stainless steel is to preheat the pan properly over medium heat. To check if it's ready, perform the water test: sprinkle a few drops of water onto the surface; if they sizzle and evaporate almost immediately, the pan is likely hot enough. Coat the pan generously with butter or oil to prevent sticking. Let the French toast cook undisturbed until it develops a golden-brown crust on one side before flipping. Use a spatula to gently lift and turn the slices, avoiding tearing. Adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning while ensuring thorough cooking.
Note #2- Some delicious topping ideas are :
  • Warm maple syrup for sweetness.
  • Fresh berries for color.
  • Powdered sugar for appeal.
  • Whipped cream for indulgence.
  • Sliced bananas for natural sweetness.
  • Nutella or peanut butter for decadence
  • Honey or agave syrup for floral sweetness.
  • Toasted nuts for crunch.
  • Caramel Sauce for richness.
