Scrumptious Chocolate Peppermint Pie 1 recipe uses essential oil, extract version available also. 3 layers, peppermint cream cheese, chocolate peppermint and peppermint whipped cream. We have become a peppermint essential oil loving family. I have always loved peppermint so when I became involved with essential oils a few years back, peppermint was one of my first go to oils. What I found, not only does it have a wonderful holiday taste but it quickly eradicates colds and tummy troubles. Anytime I have a hint of a sore throat starting, a cup of hot tea with 2 drops of the oil and it is gone 99% of the time. The thing about peppermint essential oil is it is very potent, as it is with most essential oils. You can’t just start sipping. Inhaling the vapor for a few minutes is half of what will stop the cold in its tracks. My husband has fallen in love with using it to clear his sinuses and watching him enjoy his tea is an entertaining show. It does such a good job that he usually moans for the first 10 breathes. Now mind you, my husband is not at all dramatic, so when he holds his head and the “hurt so good” moans start, I always giggle. It is not that I like seeing him in pain, it is just a funny kind of oddity, seeing my big, strong husband sucker punched by 2 drops of oil.

Peppermint essential oil for Scrumptious Chocolate Peppermint Pie

I am not at all an expert with essential oils, just highly intrigued with their benefits. I can only share with you my personal experience. My husband and I very happily ingest peppermint oil, however we don’t let the little one, pitter pattering around our house ingest it. Because of essential oils strength, extreme caution should be used when using oils around children and pets. For a thorough evaluation of essential oils, check out The Hippy Homemaker’s article The Case for Ingestion- Is Ingesting Essential Oils Safe? For this Scrumptious Chocolate Peppermint Pie recipe I included an alternative of peppermint extract. I have to say though that the essential oil version was definitely my favorite hands down.

  • chocolate for shaving
  • peppermint candies *crushed

Cream Cheese Layer

  • 4 oz cream cheese *softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp peppermint extract *or 3 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

Chocolate Pudding Layer

  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tsp peppermint extract *or 7 drop peppermint essential oil
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 lg egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 7 oz dark chocolate bar *chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter *cut into pieces

Whipped Cream Layer

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 tsp peppermint extract *or 3 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

Instructions

  • For the Cream Cheese Layer- Beat softened cream cheese in a standing mixer until smooth. Add sugar, peppermint and whipping cream and mix on high until light and fluffy, scraping down sides of bowl halfway through. Once mixed, pour evenly into pre-baked pie shell. Place in refrigerator while preparing chocolate layer.
  • For Chocolate Layer
    - Chop chocolate bar and butter into small pieces, set aside. Place milk, peppermint, cornstarch, egg yolks, salt and sugar in a large saucepan over medium heat, whisking consistently until thickened- approximately 7-8 minutes. Add chocolate and butter, take off of heat and continue whisking until chocolate and butter are melted and completely incorporated. Pour evenly over cream cheese layer and refrigerate for at least 12 hours.
Note: Be very careful to take pudding off of heat once it is thickened. If pudding becomes too thick whisk in a tablespoon at a time more of milk until desired consistency is achieved.
  • For Whipped Cream Layer
    - Place whipping cream, peppermint and sugar in chilled medium bowl mixing bowl. Beat with hand mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Spoon on top of chocolate layer. Garnish with chocolate shavings and crushed peppermint candies. Serve immediately.

We started a new holiday tradition and trust me, THIS will become the new GO TO holiday dessert! The only change I made to the recipe was using a pre-made chocolate cookie pie shell — we are serious chocolate fans! When I made the chocolate pudding filling, I had a little leftover that wouldn’t fit in the pie shell, so gave it to my brother who exclaimed, “It tastes just like a York peppermint patty!” It traveled well (about 30 minutes) to my destination — I simply made the whipped cream topping about three hours before leaving and let it set in the frig until time to go. Thank you for making my holidays a little bit sweeter!!!
