Despite the fact that I am literally the biggest baby when it comes to summer heat, I do find summer foods and drinks to be absolutely amazing.

Let me tell you, the creation of this Hibiscus Pink Lemonade has just rounded out my summertime happiness.

It has a perfect balance of sweet to tartness and just tastes absolutely amazing.

What is Pink Lemonade?

Becoming popular sometime in the late 1800’s, pink lemonade has been synonymous with summertime ever since. Here is what is so interesting, pink lemonade tastes no different than regular lemonade. People love it because it is bright and just simply fun to look at.

What makes Pink Lemonade Pink?

Interestingly enough, there is not one set standard way to make Pink Lemonade pink. Sometimes it is berries or red fruit giving it that beautiful shade of pink. More often then not it is made with troublesome red dye.

How To Make Pink Lemonade Without Red 40

One of the easiest and most delicious ways to make this summertime drink is to use dried hibiscus flowers following these steps:

  1. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling turn off heat and add 6 heaping teaspoons of dried hibiscus flowers. Seep for 10 mins and strain through a fine mesh strainer into a gallon sized pitcher.
  2. Meanwhile bring 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil until sugar melts.
  3. Juice 10-12 lemons (about 2 cups).
  4. Mix all 3 ingredients in pitcher along with enough water to make 1 full gallon.
  5. Chill, stir well and serve over ice.

Does Hibiscus have caffeine?

No, thankfully hibiscus flowers do not have caffeine, making this summertime drink perfect for all age groups.

Using Honey Instead of Sugar

One of the most common questions about this summery drink is whether or not honey can replace the sugar. Yes, however, I do recommend that local raw organic honey be used for this recipe as compared to ordinary grocery store honey.

Simply replace the sugar with an equal amount of honey and continue following the directions as written.

Hibiscus Pink Lemonade

Incredibly refreshing and tasty, this Hibiscus Pink Lemonade is better than anything you can purchase at your local coffee shop. Completely natural, caffeine free and very easy to make! This is the new hot drink of summer.

Ingredients

  • 6 heaping tsp dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice *about 10-12 lemons
  • 1 gallon good quality water

Instructions

  • In a med sized sauce pan bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling take off heat and add hibiscus flowers. Seep for 10 mins or until a deep rich hue has been achieved. Strain and add to a gallon sized pitcher. 
  • Meanwhile, in a separate saucepan bring to a boil 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water until sugar is dissolved, about 3-4 mins. Set Aside. 
  • Squeeze lemons and add to pitcher. Stir in simple syrup (sugar water) and fill the remaining amount of space in the pitcher with water. Stir well and chill until cold. 
    Stir again before serving.
